About Us

GB Appaloosa & Quarter Horse Stud started out with the purchase of Sunrise Jagady Sugar Chic back in 1980, a gorgeous 5 mth old Appaloosa filly. At the same time we purchased a QH filly and we have been involved with breeding and showing both breeds ever since. Jagady was shown very successfully and the whole family became involved.

Her first foal was Jagadys Jetson, a legend in his time. He won so much that it would fill pages to mention it all. Sadly he is not with us anymore. Click on his picture or name to read a beautiful tribute to him. Her second foal was Jagady Billy Bar Oh who was the sire at GB for a number of years and two of our great mares are sired by him. GB Classique L'Amour is a multi champion Halter & Performance winner as well as a NZ Champion. She is out of the QH mare Jolie L'Amour (now deceased) who was a multiple champion producing dam. Springs Maggie Bar was also sired by Jagady Billy Bar Oh, also a multi champion Halter & Perfomance winner as well as a NZ Champion. She produced three foals for us but sadly Maggie is no longer with us - she will be greatly missed. The first horse we imported from Australia was Mighty Invincible in 1994, an Appaloosa stallion who we stood at stud and competed successfully with, he now resides in the South Island.

In 1999 we imported Blue Suede Zipper (Pine), our second QH stallion (we stood Olita Emperor at stud for two years before we gelded him & he was our first QH stallion). During his show career Pine was shown to great success by Jozette, take a look here to see some of their achievements.

In 2000 we imported three Quarter Horses (one was not yet born). Zippin Undercover was one of them and he has gone on to be a great show gelding. Arriving on the plane with him was Boston Dreamgirl, a palomino mare by the USA imported stallion Boston Boz. She was in foal to the exciting import from USA Tall Dark N Radical. GB Radical Minnie is her daughter, a beautiful mare with a very successful show career, now teaching someone new to western.

In 2002 Jozette imported two young colts from Australia. Both containing fantastic reining and all-round performance bloodlines. Chic Magnet was sold on and is now very sadly deceased, but thankfully we have some lovely babies of his to go on with. CL Okay, Who Dun It has now moved to Te Puke.

In 2003 we imported Miss Flashy Belle, a lovely young mare who was in foal to Pawsitively Blazing at the time. Sadly the lovely colt she produced broke his leg. Because we lost this colt we looked for a replacement and found Radz Good Lookin who arrived in NZ in 2004. He has now moved to the South Island.

In 2003 we purchased Freckles Cotton Candy, a mare we had our eye on since we first saw her as a yearling and said if she was ever for sale then we would buy her. Two times AQHA-NZ National Supreme Champion. Flax has been a school horse and broodmare since arriving here and has taught many people. She is now retired from riding and her sole career is raising lovely babies for us.

In October 2003, after 6 years in the IT industry, Jozette quit her computer job. She came back to training and instructing full time and has never looked back!

2004 also saw the arrival of three more mares - one who was already in NZ. You can see the stunning JBARC Blazing Glory, Skip Chip N Berry and Ima Dream Too on the mare page. Glory has gone on to be very successful and versatile in the showring, multiple High Point winner in her second season of showing. Lena (Ima Dream Too) was 2006 NZRHA Futurity and Open Champion. Skip was trained but never shown due to an injury just prior to what would have been her first show season.

In May 2005 James completed his farrier apprenticeship which had been based in Cambridge, and finally moved home after 4 long yrs living in Cambridge.

In 2006 we jumped at the chance to own My Irish Rose (Aust. 'Rowsitively'), very closely bred to our lovely Glory and out of an extremely successfully performed mare. Rosa has shown a lot of talent and had many successes in her first show season. That year Play The Queen also arrived at GB Stud, a little mare I'd had my eye on since she was a foal.

JacSmart stood at GB Stud in 2006 and was campaigned in Reining by James. He then went back to his owner Harry Gordon to be enjoyed as a gelding.

In 2007 Oaks Little Romeo arrived at GB Stud to become the main lesson horse. He took over from Flax, as being a gelding he could be ridden all year. He has been a great asset in helping teach people the ropes - and has many fans!

On 22 April 2007 James & Jozette were married in a beautiful ceremony in Kumeu. 2008 will see the arrival of their first baby!

In 2007 we purchases the American stallion Red Hot Choc - another horse we'd had our eye on since he was born. His first babies have been extremely successful and we look forward to riding one of his first babies early 2009. In 2008 the decision was made to cut back to one stallion due to the imminent arrival of a baby, so we farewelled Radz and Dougal to their lovely new homes.

2007 also saw the return of GB Oh Gypsy Dream to GB Stud, it was a very happy day that she came home as Anne had always planned to buy her back at some stage. Gypsy also helps out as a lesson horse when she is needed.

There is plenty more to tell but we'll give your eyes a rest for now from reading!
